Liburnia’s New 70-Tonne SPMT Signals Push to Control High-Risk Heavy Lift Moves in Croatia

Velebit-Promet, part of Liburnia Group, has added an 8-axle self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) to its fleet, expanding its ability to handle oversized and complex cargo in Croatia and across the region.

The unit, supplied from the Cometto MSPE range, offers an axle load capacity of up to 70 tonnes and is designed for precise maneuvering in constrained port and industrial environments. The investment reflects a broader strategy by the group to internalize critical heavy transport capabilities and reduce reliance on third-party equipment in high-risk operations.

The addition comes as demand for heavy lift and project cargo transport in Europe remains closely tied to energy, infrastructure, and industrial projects, where execution risk and timing are key commercial factors. By deploying its own SPMT, Velebit-Promet aims to improve operational control, reduce coordination complexity, and enhance safety during cargo positioning and transport phases.

Precision Handling in Constrained Environments

According to company information, the SPMT is equipped with 360-degree electronic steering and hydraulic lifting systems, allowing operators to position cargo with high accuracy without repeated repositioning. This capability is particularly relevant in congested terminals or industrial sites where space limitations can delay operations and increase handling risks.

SPMTs are widely used in project logistics to transport heavy components such as transformers, modules, and industrial equipment. Their modular design allows configurations to be adapted to specific load requirements, while electronic steering enables synchronized movement across multiple axle lines.

The newly acquired unit will be deployed across projects managed by Velebit-Promet and Liburnia Group, including port operations and inland industrial transport in Croatia and neighboring markets.

Strengthening In-House Logistics Control

The investment highlights a continued shift among project logistics providers toward owning critical assets rather than outsourcing specialized transport functions. Control over equipment such as SPMTs can reduce dependency on external providers, particularly in markets where availability is limited or demand is volatile.

For Liburnia Group, which operates across project cargo, maritime services, and agency functions, integrating heavy transport capabilities supports end-to-end logistics offerings. This approach allows closer coordination between sea transport, port handling, and inland delivery, which is often required for large-scale industrial and energy projects.

The company said the new SPMT represents one of the first units of this configuration in the Croatian market and ranks among the highest load-capacity systems currently available locally.

Regional Market Context

Croatia and the wider Adriatic region have seen steady activity in infrastructure and energy-related projects, including renewable energy developments and industrial upgrades. These projects typically require specialized transport solutions for oversized components, increasing demand for heavy lift equipment and expertise.

Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Zagreb, Velebit-Promet specializes in road transport of heavy and oversized cargo and has been part of Liburnia Group since 2021. The group also includes Liburnia Maritime Agency and Tanta Agency, offering integrated logistics services across Europe.

The deployment of the SPMT is expected to support ongoing and future contracts requiring high-precision cargo handling, particularly where project timelines and site constraints limit operational flexibility.

Industry participants will be watching whether similar investments follow across the region, as operators seek to secure capacity and maintain control over increasingly complex logistics chains.
